Empowering BIPOC voices and building stronger communities.
What is Pamoja Place?
Pamoja Place is committed to fostering a sense of belonging and resilience for BIPOC individuals on Whidbey Island. Through various programs to empower youth and connect community members, we create safe spaces promoting joy, safety, and connection.
At Pamoja Place, the needs and aspirations of the BIPOC community are at the core of our mission.
Readiness To Learn is proud to be the fiscal sponsor of Pamoja Place.
What Does 'Pamoja' Mean?
"Pamoja" is a Swahili word meaning "together" or "togetherness." It represents a commitment to uniting the Whidbey Island BIPOC community, white allies, and cultural organizations in collaboration, reflection, education, and celebration.
What Does Pamoja Place Do?
Our work is centered around three key initiatives:
Community Education: We host conversations, cultural gatherings, interactive panels, and storytelling events to empower our community by sharing our own stories, which serve as our roots and wings.
BIPOC Youth Mentoring & Engagement: We focus on building self-awareness and self-worth among BIPOC youth, fostering a sense of belonging. Through mentorship from BIPOC elders, we close generational gaps and pass on wisdom and stories of navigating society.
Adult BIPOC Affinity Groups: We create spaces for BIPOC adults to share experiences, uplift one another, and form meaningful connections. Regular gatherings and smaller affinity groups help foster solid friendships and community bonds.
